You may know that Brewers and Bakers were always located very near each other because before baker's yeast was developed the only way yeast was available was as a by-product of brewing - in the north Barm bread and rolls are a throw back to these times.
Well, our Mill Road neighbour Dave makes his own very good beer from malted Barley and this week he brought me the spent grain. Mark squeezed the excess liquid and then put it in trays in our cooling oven. Once dried out we put it through a food processor to make a sort of barley flour.
We used this in a wholemeal loaf (replacing 10% of the flour) and also used some of the brewing liquited to replace 50% of the water. The result? Well a very worthy, but also very tastin wholemeal loaf with lots of body and sort of 'hay-like' after taste - really very nice indeed. - see the photo. If anyone fancies trying one let us know.
Cakes, cakes cakes & Prices
We've been delighted with the reception our new cake range has received. At least four people have indepedently told us or Wendy at Bushel Box that Orb's Lemon Drizzle is the best they've tasted. We laughed when one of our customers wrote:
"I have a complaint.
Not only do I have to avoid amazing muffins and beautiful bread pudding but you now make the best version of my favourite cake ever! I will be the size of a house soon!
I have sampled a lot of lemon drizzles. There are 2 things that often go wrong - not enough drizzle or mushy horrid icing. Your cake has the perfect amount of drizzle - zingy and lemony - and a thin slick of crispy lemon icing which in my book is about as close to perfect as you can get! Perfect would mean no calorific content!"
