Orb Bakery - about us.....
Caroline Newman and Mark Webb have lived in Over, 9 miles north of Cambridge, UK, for over 15 years. Being part of the Over and surrounding villages' community life is really important for both of us.
Mark began baking with the kids when they were small – lots of sticky fingers and yummy bread!
We have baked our own bread ever since; with young children we were then heavily dependent on the bread machine!
Since early 2012 we have rediscovered the immense pleasure of creating great tastes from simple ingredients with our hands – Orb Bakery bread is truly hand-made!
We have also discovered what Real Bread is… and more importantly what it is not.

Real Bread Campaign
Orb is a proud member of the Real Bread Campaign. ‘Real’ bread is defined by the Campaign as bread that is made using only: flour, water, yeast (baker’s yeast or naturally occurring yeasts which are created for raising sourdough bread) and salt…………so no additives unlike over 80% of the bread that is bought in the UK!
We enjoy real bread so much, but we also know that it is hard to find locally, that's why we set up Orb Bakery.

Mark's Bakery Volunteer Apprenticeship
To find out what life is like working in a bakery during Spring and Summer 2012 Mark worked the Friday night/Saturday morning shift at the award winning Hambleton Bakery at Oakham, Rutland.
Master Baker at Hambleton, Julian Carter, was crowned Baker of the Year 2013 following hard on the heels of Hambleton being awarded the accolade of being Britain's Best Bakery 2012 in the ITV show of the same name.
"This could not have been better experience," says Mark. "It was joy to see fantastic artisan breads and savories being created by a dedicated team of bakers. Being a part of this, even for the few months I was there, was a privilege. Julian's dedication to incredibly high quality standards is something I hope to emulate with our Orb Bakery venture."

Orb's story so far.....
Over summer 2013 we tested the local market. We had our sold our first breads and muffins at a very successful stall at the Over Carnival selling over 140 fruit muffins and nearly 70 loaves of bread in just under two hours! We had really positive feedback and some good constructive comments.
We are now producing products to order each week and are consistently producing quality products that our customers tell us they really enjoy. We also have a weekly stall at St Ives market and supply the wonderful Bushel Box Farm Shop in Willingham with bread and cakes each week.
In August 2015 we were delighted to have been voted by our customers to be finalist 'Producer of the Year in the Cambridge Food & Drink Awards.
