Happy Bank Holiday Monday!
Hope you're all having fun.
B.L.T. - Rosegate Farm - Swavesey
We've just had a wonderful BLT with smoked streaky from David's Buchery at Rosegate Farm in Swavesey. We made the sandwich with one of our white cob loaves.
Rosegate is well worth a trip if you've not been yet - great local no food miles meat, sausages, offal etc and strawberries in June too.
We're hoping to be down there on some Saturday mornings in June with some bread, and shortbread for the masses to have with their wonderful Pick Your Own stawberreis

Challah Bread A lovely lady came to the stall at St Ives & asked for 'Challah' bread. We'd never heard of it. She told us it was really tasty Jewish bead and as she said she'd be at the stall each week if we did make it we thought it worth a bit of investigation! Challah is a gently enriched Jewish bread baked for each sabbath - also baked on feast days when it is enriched even more with fruits. Wikki says: According to Jewish tradition, the three Sabbath meals (Friday night, Saturday lunch, and Saturday late afternoon) and two holiday meals (one at night and lunch the following day) each begin with two complete loaves of bread.[5] This "double loaf" (in Hebrew: lechem mishneh) commemorates the manna that fell from the heavens when the Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years after the Exodus from Egypt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challah It is a braided bread and can be made with different numbers of stands - the numbers have religious signficance (see the Wikki link) - So our first attempt at this bread we thought go for broke - ladies & gentlemen.......a SIX stranded braid!! (see photos). And best of all it tastes fantastic. A bit more briochy than our milk loaf (Challah has eggs and sugar - and no milk). It's lovely with just butter or with jam. We'll cost it up and hopefully begin to offer it on the order after this one - has anyone else ever tried this bread before? |
Spelt & Wholemeal Soda Bread
In the wee small hours of the morning last week while waiting for some bread to bake Mark started thumbing through the Waitrose Weekend paper - and found a recipe for Spelt Soda bread. Those of you that know soda bread know that it has to be the fastest bread you can make - only needing enough time to put the ingredients together and bake it - about an hour in total!
And it was fantastic - really nutty with that distinctive soda bread taste - coming from the Bicarbinate of Soda that is used to raise the bread instead of yeast. It was so good we'll also cost this one up this week and hopeflyy add to next week's order.
BTW- Soda bread cannot be classed as Real Bread under the Real Bread Campaign's (http://www.sustainweb.org/realbread/) definition because Bicarbinate of Soda is a raising agent that is considered an additive. Ours uses stoneground organic spelt and wholemeal flour from Fosters Mill at Swafham Prior http://fostersmill.co.uk/
Orb Holidays - no bake weekend of 4th July
Orb is off on its holidays this week - we've a family wedding to go to in Devon and so are taking the opportunity for a few days holiday - leaving the kids in charge - so If you want bread the following week do keep an eye on the Orb homestead during the week before!!! We'll keep reminding you of this so that if you need to order some bread/cake for the freezer you can get them in on time.
